Occupational Therapy

An occupational therapist specializes in helping children to be more independent in activities of daily living or ADLs. Any task that your child completes during the day is considered an ADL. A child who needs occupational therapy services may have difficulty with eating, dressing, bathing, handwriting, using scissors, buttoning, or tying shoes.

Occupational therapists may also work with children who experience sensory dysfunction such as lack of body and space perception or difficulty touching various textures. Often times, we help children who get upset in response to everyday tasks such as cutting finger nails or washing hair. Children with and without special needs may experience difficulty with daily tasks and can benefit from occupational therapy. Through a detailed evaluation of your child’s level of performance in critical developmental areas, a plan of treatment is made.

At The Autism Center of Pittsburgh we believe that parental involvement in goal setting and treatment planning is crucial to successful outcomes. We encourage parents and caregivers to attend sessions and ask questions. During each treatment we provide modeling and offer helpful suggestions for carry-over at home. We choose toys and activities appropriate for your child’s age and abilities and each success is celebrated.
