Religious Education Program

Saint Scholastica Catholic Church’s located in Aspinwall, PA  has an elementary religious education program and is looking to reach out to students with developmental disorders that would make learning via “traditional” methods very difficult.  If you are interested please contact jamiedillon@comcast.net.  The church hopes to initialize this program in the fall but will need input from families.

Medication Management with Children and Teens

Southwood Psychiatric Hospital presents another in our Breakfast Seminars. Dr. Geith Shahoud will host a lecture and discussion about the challenges and trends in medication management with children and teens.  This is a great opportunity for therapists, counselors, case managers, nurses and families to gain “real world” applications to take back and employee in their own settings.

The event will be held on Friday, July 16, 2010 at Southwood Psychiatric Hospital.  Registration begins at 8:30.  If interested, contact Kevin Daly at (412) 257-2290 or email at Kevin.Daly@yfcs.com to confirm your attendance.  Limited seating is available.

The Woodlands 2010 Summer Camps

At Risk Babies; Feeding & sensory issues to keep in mind

Join us on Wednesday, July 14th, 6:30-7:30pm for an informative evening when we will discuss the key points to consider when dealing with babies who are at risk of developing feeding or sensory issues. Babies in this category are children who are premature, have an inutero diagnosis and babies with complications that prevent them from leaving hospital in a typical timeframe. Theiss Early Autism Program of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) Open Enrollment for Summer and Fall 2010
The Theiss Early Autism Program provides care for children ages 2-5 years of age. The children follow an individualized program and receive small group and one-on-one instruction through Applied Behavior Analysis, including Discrete Trial Teaching, Applied Verbal Behavior, and Natural Environment Teaching. Each individualized treatment program is designed to address a child’s cognitive and language skills, self-care and adaptive behavior, and social-emotional development. Daily activities also include circle time, gross motor, playground activities, pretend play, early language arts, art and sensory activities, cooperative play in small groups, self-help activities, meal time (lunch, snack), and socialization activities. The program is located at the Hill House Association near the Mellon Arena at 1835 Centre Avenue, WPIC Autism Suite 200, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Hours are 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. The program runs for 12 months a year, Monday through Friday. ABOARD & Venture Outdoors are Joining Forces to offer FREE FAMILY EVENTS - Kayaking Lake Elizabeth/Allegheny Commons

Friday, July 16, 2010 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM This will be a great FREE fun activity for the entire family that wants to try Kayaking! That’s right; we’re taking the kayaks to Pittsburgh’s oldest park, Allegheny Commons, to help beginners get started on picturesque Lake Elizabeth. We’ll begin with some basic paddling instruction, get fitted with a life jacket, and then take our stable beginner-friendly kayak for an easy unguided 20-minute paddle around the lake. After making your way around the island and under the arched footbridges a few times, you’ll be ready to hit the region’s larger lakes & rivers. Kayaks, equipment and instruction are provided. Children under 12 may paddle a tandem kayak with an adult. Find the lake (roughly) near the corner of North Ave. and Brighton Road, near the National Aviary. Program sponsored by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Also bring a blanket and picnic basket dinner to enjoy afterwards in the beautiful park! On Saturday, July 31st we’ll be at McKinley Park in Mount Oliver. (Courts, Full Track, and Skate Park!) Join us 12pm-4pm for an afternoon of beginner-friendly outdoor fun for the whole family! Venture Outdoors is hosting three Family Outdoor Festivals this summer.  Try scaling a climbing wall, using a GPS unit to find secret treasures, or biking around the park.  Food, music and dancing will be offered throughout the event. Embark on a special mission to find hidden treasures in the park! Hand-held GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) units will be used to locate the treasures, or “caches” in this family-friendly adventure. This is a free, drop-in activity, so show up anytime between 2pm-4:30pm and we’ll show you how to use a GPS unit and set you on your course. Supplies are limited. No experience necessary. Pounds for Charity 3 vs. 3 Basketball Tournament
