Autism Center Teams Up with Wrap Agency

Autism Centers Collaborate with Community Alternatives!

After several months of meeting and researching and speaking to other parents, we have decided to embark on a new collaboration with Community Alternatives — a local wraparound agency. They have agreed to let parents participate in the training of TSS and other staff so that the wraparound staff can gain a practical perspective of what it’s like to walk in our shoes, as parents. We feel that the TSS’s and BSC’s will gain the knowledge and respect of what it’s like to be the parent of a child with autism.

We often hear complaints of poorly wraparound staff, so we decided to do something about it. At the Autism Center, we are parents too — we understand how frustrating it is to have staffing issues. Community Alternatives is dedicated to this project and has been very open minded about allowing parents, non-clinicians, to assist in training of new and existing staff.

We are not clinicians. We are not magicians. Our degrees in the clinical field come from having multiple children on the spectrum and working at the Centers with other parents. We have a unique perspective that we can impart that will hopefully lead to a better of understanding of the complicated lives we lead.

We also plan to implement several new programs in the near future, including music therapy and innovative new technology-based program for children with autism. We believe that through collaboration we will be able to help wraparound agencies provide some of the best services in the state. This program, to our knowledge, is unique in Pennsylvania.
